MANILA, July 24, 2009—While some lawmakers threatened to boycott the President’s State of the Nation Address next week, a ranking church leader is urging the public to listen to her.
Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, said people must listen to President Arroyo and assess her report.
It is only through listening closely, according to the Jaro archbishop in a radio interview, will the country know whether she is lying or not.
“We are encouraging the faithful to listen to what the President will say on her programs and on the country’s state,” Lagdameo said over Church-run Radyo Veritas Friday.
“After listening to her SONA, it is only then we could discern and analyze properly on what she said,” he said.
Some militant members of the lower House served notice they were boycotting Mrs Arroyo’s report on July 27 at the Batasan Pambansa in Quezon City.
In the Senate, at least four of its leading members have also said they were skipping this year’s SONA as a sign of protest against the plan to convert the Congress into a constituent assembly.
Others members of the Upper Chamber said they would attend to hear the SONA but warned they would stage a “walkout” if they sensed the House leadership tries to transform the joint session into a Con-ass for the purpose of amending the Constitution.
Jolo Bishop Martin Jumoad, meanwhile, said the president’s annual report could be her last chance to salvage her administration’s failing credibility.
He called on the President to be truthful in her address so as to regain the trust of the Filipino people.
“She needs to be honest if she still wants to regain the trust of Filipinos,” he said.
“The President should also admit her shortcomings, her mistakes, even the promises she failed to meet,” added Jumoad. (Roy Lagarde)
