Pope prays for Cory
MANILA, July 23, 2009— Pope Benedict XVI imparted his blessing to former President Corazon Aquino, who has been hospitalized for colon cancer.
Informed personally about her state of health by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican secretary of state, the pontiff wished to express his “spiritual closeness,” stated a communiqué issued by the Apostolic Nunciature in the Philippines.
“The Holy Father has asked that you be informed you be informed that he is remembering you in his prayers,” Papal nuncio to the Philippines Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams told Aquino.
Former Philippine Ambassador to the Vatican Henrietta de Villa said the pope is being “continuously updated” on Mrs Aquino’s condition.
De Villa said she personally delivered the letter to Mrs Aquino yesterday at the Makati Medical Center. She added a grandson of the former President read the message to her.
“She (Mrs Aquino) was deeply consoled,” said De Villa who also chairs the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV).
A mass, presided by Fr Catalino Arevalo, was also held inside Mrs Aquino’s room at the hospital together with her daughters Balsy and Pinky and her husband and son, Viel.
Her doctor, nurses and Congressman Teddy Locsin were also present during the Mass, according to De Villa.
“The Mass is her sustaining comfort now. It was such a privilege sharing the Eucharist in her presence. Even in her sick bed looking so incredibly weak, she exuded an aura of a peaceful yet powerful presence – the presence of the simplicity of absolute goodness,” she said.
“Every now there seems to be no sacrifice that is so great that she has not offered to God for our country, that she continues to offer to God,” added De Villa.
The family of the former President on Sunday said her condition has deteriorated. Mrs Aquino’s daughter wept as she outlined her mother’s condition to a television network.
"She is in pain already, so please pray for her so that it could be lessened," Kristina Bernadette Aquino told ABS-CBN television.
"We don't know how many more hours, days and weeks God will give her, but please help us pray that my Mom won't suffer too much pain," she said.
A spokeswoman for the family earlier said Mrs Aquino, 76, had given up all medical intervention including chemotherapy and was leaving her fate to God. (Roy Lagarde)
